Abstract

1424901 Pressure testing bottles AUTOMATED MACHINE SYSTEMS INC 13 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 33610/73 Heading G1S Bottles 27, Fig. 1, are enclosed by a lowered honeycomb carrier 25 and moved along a test table 24 by reciprocating shafts 30 releasably engaging ears 28 on the carrier. At position B the bottles are quick filled with water from spouts 32 and are then moved by 30 to position C for slow topping off. At station D the bottles are each subjected to an axial load from a press platen and internal pressure, at station E broken bottles are discarded, and at F sound bottles are deposited on a take away conveyer and the carrier 25 is lifted up and conveyed back to the start. The arrangement of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate how the hydraulic internal test pressure is built up in each sound bottle as platen 47 descends and valves (51) are opened. After the test, the test heads (48) are raised from the bottles which are then moved to the disposal station E. At this station bottle neck chucks 64, Figs. 5-7 (not shown) grip the sound bottles, or release the broken bottles. All of the sound bottles which have withstood the internal hydraulic pressure and axial loading remain filled with water but a faulty bottle allows its piston (100) to move downwardly to drive rods (106, 107) down to open the chuck and release the bottle. Defective bottles fall through a trap 24 into a bin 125 whilst sound bottles are moved with their carriers 25 to station F. In a modification, instead of moving the bottles in carriers they are randomly placed on a feed conveyer 126, Fig. 9, and passed between longitudinally extending parallel fingers which have guide strips and line the bottles into columns. As the shaft 30 reciprocates, sets of locating pins (128, 138) are raised vertically between the bottles Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) and the bed blocks supporting the bottles are expanded by retraction of a piston (141) Figs. 12, 13 (not shown). This action segregates and uniformly spaces the bottles at station A after which carriers 25 are lowered and moved to carry the bottles to the first filling station B as before.
