Abstract

1424481 Preparation of alumina slurries CONTINENTAL OIL CO 16 April 1973 [14 April 1972] 18295/73 Heading C1A A method of preparing concentrated alumina slurries comprises evaporating an organic solvent-aqueous alumina mixture comprising 1- 15% wt. Al 2 O 3 , 20-90% wt. organic solvent and 15-65% wt. water to produce a concentrated alumina slurry comprising from 14 to 20% wt. Al 2 O 3 , 15 to 70% wt. H 2 O and 71 to 10% wt. of organic solvent. Solvents preferred are ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol or tertiary butanol. The solvent and water are preferably removed by azeotropic evaporation under reduced pressure. During the evaporation process, the solvent-aqueous alumina mixture is preferably subjected to a shear effect of from 10 to 10,000 sec.-<SP>1</SP>. The concentrated slurry may be drum or spray dried to produce alumina having a surface area of from 260 to 400 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., a pore volume of from 1 to 2À75 c.c/g. and a loose bulk density of from 7À5 to 25 lbs./ft.<SP>3</SP>.
