Abstract

1424334 Expanding metal UNION CARBIDE CORP 28 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 59800/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division B5] A process for expanding the cross-section of a blank of low-melting-point alloy with the attendant formation of one or more voids 4 of reduced pressure, comprises venting the voids during the increasing of the cross-section so as to equilibrate the pressure within the voids with the ambient pressure and thereby regulate the integrity of the expanded blank. In Figs. 2 and 4 a blank 2 is heated in a Carverpress and secured by hot-tack adhesion to perforate mould plates 1a, 1b which are moved apart to effect the expansion. Each void is vented through an aperture in the mould plate. In an alternative embodiment a continuous blank can be fed between a pair of heated belts. The form of the voids in the expanded cross-section is controlled by the form of the mould plates which are usually of porous or non-porous metals. Many different plates are described, some having patterned open-work arrangements, to form various designs on the surfaces of the formed blanks. In some cases the plates are not stripped from the blanks and result in a laminate. If necessary the mould plates can be masked to prevent adhesion in certain areas. Examples given for the use of the blanks made by this process indude structural elements, containers, partitions, packaging, automobile framing and furniture.
