Abstract
142,432. Madsen, C. P. April 26, 1919. [Convention date]. Metals, depositing; electrodes, moving; treating surfaces.-In the deposition of nickel, cobalt, or alloys containing considerable amounts of one or both of these, a quantity of nickel hydrate is added to the liquid, which is heated to 130 F., and the cathode is periodically exposed to the air or other gaseous medium for at least sufficient time to allow hydrogen to escape from the deposited metal. The time is usually between 1 and 2 seconds; the exposure should not be. so prolonged as to produce lamination of the metal, which may occur when the duration exceeds 6-16 seconds. The period between successive exposures may be 1-2 minutes. As shown, the cathode 5, situated behind the anode 3, is periodically raised by mechanism 7. A suitable electrolyte contains 1 litre of water, 240 grm. nickel sulphate, 20 grm. nickel chloride, 40 grm. boric acid, and 1-10 grm. of an alkali-metal salt, such as sodium sulphate, adapted to produce nickel hydrate during electrolysis. There may be added 1-5 arm. freshlyprecipitated nickel hydrate, for the initial period of working. The current density at the cathode may be 10 amp. per sq. dcm. The deposited metal is compact, reguline, ductile, and free from hydrogen.
