Abstract

1424322 Moulding plastics foam C L J HEWITT and J A COX 15 Jan 1973 [28 Oct 1971] 50042/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] Apparatus used for making annular elements of foamed synthetic plastics material (e.g. polyurethane) for supporting and insulating pipework (Division F2), comprises a rotary table 20 having a central loading vessel 21 from which the mix is passed via channels 22 to mould cavities 12 each defined by a part of the table 20 and by a tool 23 movable relative to the table. Feeding of the mix and the movement of tools 23 is controlled to avoid the inclusion of air in the mix, the tools 23 being moved upwards at a rate correlated with the rate of foaming of the mix to obtain a foamed product of pre-determined density, thermal conductivity and load-carrying capacity. Upward movement of the tools 23 is limited by engagement with a stop 23a. When the mix has foamed and reached a predetermined partially set condition the table is rotated to an ejecting position where the mould cavities are opened and ejection elements 24 actuated to eject the elements from the cavities. The table 20 consists of upper and lower parts 20a and 20b which separate at the plane of channels 22 to allow removal of partially set material therefrom by elements 25.
