Abstract

1331687 Injection moulding cartridge cases OLIN CORP 30 June 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 30718/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F3] A method of manufacturing a wad for a shotgun cartridge comprises injecting a mixture of molten plastics material and a foaming agent through a sprue 86 into the mould cavity 84, cooling the cavity to cool a portion of the plastics material whilst retaining the remainder in a molten state, moving the plug 92 and plunger 96 to the right to permit foaming to occur, and solidifying the foamed portion to provide an integral foam cushion. The cushion is arranged to have a density 20-60% of that of the solid parts of the wad and is in the range 10-35 lb./ft<SP>3</SP>. The wad is removed from the plug 92 by relative movement of the plunger 96. The plastics material comprises ethylene-vinyl acetate co-polymer, a co-opolymer of ethyl acetate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl acetate, a copolymer of polyethylene and butyl rubber, and mixtures thereof. The foaming agent comprises azondicarbonamide, P,P<SP>1</SP>-oxybis (benzene sulphonyl hydrazide), azobis (isobutyronitrile), and N,N<SP>1</SP>- dinitroso-penta-methylenetetramine, and mixtures thereof. In an example a molten mixture of 99% polyethylene-vinylacetate copolymer and 1% azodicarbonamide is fed into the mould cavity at 5000 p.s.i. and, after cooling, the pressure is reduced to 500 p.s.i. to allow foaming to occur.
