Abstract

1379052 Transfer injection of foamed plastics material L STAERMAN 27 April 1972 19640/72 Heading B5A In order to fill the foaming/injection chamber 3 of a transfer injection apparatus unfoamed plastized material containing a foaming agent is fed from a plastizing chamber 1 through a movable transfer nozzle 4. The latter may be mounted on an injection piston 2 connected to the plasticizing chamber 1 so that the plasticized material can pass through the nozzle 4 as the piston 2 retracts. The chamber 1 contains a plasticizing screw 5 whose speed may be adjusted with respect to the retraction speed of the piston 2 to vary the density of the foam. The transfer nozzle 4 comprises a cylindrical crown 11 which is provided with circumferentially spaced outlets 12 and which communicates with the plasticizing chamber 1 via a duct 13 which can be closed by a spring-loaded ball 14 as the pressure in the chamber 1 falls and the chamber 3 fills. When the latter is full, the piston 2 and chamber 1 advances to inject the foamed material through a valved injection nozzle 9. Formation of the foam is assisted by the reduced pressure produced in the chamber 3 due to the retraction of the piston 2.
