Abstract
1424225 Chuck operating mechanisms LA PRECISION INDUSTRIELLE 10 April 1973 [11 April 1972] 17075/73 Heading B3T [Also in Division F1] A rotary hydraulic jack, particularly for exerting a pull on the control member of a chuck, comprises a piston 3 reciprocable in a cylinder 2 rotatable in bearings 9, 10, a pair of valves 25A, 25B for trapping liquid in the working chambers A, B on opposite sides of the piston 3 so as to lock the latter, and a cylindrical accumulator cavity 21 in communication with each chamber A and B and variable in volume by a spring-loaded piston 32A or 32b. Thus with both chambers A, B isolated by the valves 25A, 25B a limited amount of leakage from the chambers can be tolerated since the relevant piston 32A or 32b is urged by its spring 33 to maintain the chamber pressure. Liquid for operating the piston 3 is supplied to one or other of two annular grooves a, b in a fixed sleeve 11, the other groove being connected to exhaust. Assuming groove a is pressurized, then valve 25A opens to admit liquid to chamber A. Simultaneously a piston 23 is displaced to the left to open a valve 26B and allow liquid to exhaust from the chamber B via a tube 6 and passages 38, 37, 36 to the groove b. Pressurization of the chamber A displaces the piston 32A before reduction of pressure in the groove a causes the valves 26A, 26B to close. In a second embodiment having locking valves (41A, 41B) which are disposed in separate bores, Figs. 2-9 (not shown), each accumulator piston (45A, 45B) has two portions of differing diameter, and when liquid is applied to either chamber A or B it is also applied to the small and annular end surfaces of its accumulator piston. Thus the spring (46A or 46B) loading each accumulator piston is subjected to pressure over an area equivalent to its large end, whereby when the pressure supply to the annular surface is removed the spring causes the small surface to maintain a pressure in the associated chamber A or B which is greater than the supply pressure.
