Abstract
1423842 Injection moulding coils RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 25 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 49138/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division H4] A voice coil for an electro-acoustic transducer, such as a loud-speaker, comprises a plurality of turns of insulated wire, the wire being encapsulated in a setting material provided with a filler to improve the thermal conductivity thereof. Thermosetting material such as phenolic resin or glass-filled epoxide resin is preferably used. In manufacture, a voice coil winding is formed and is located in the mould cavity of an injection moulding machine on a mandrel which is preferably of the expanding type to ensure that the roundness of the coil is maintained and that the coil does not move during moulding. The mould cavity is cooled with water so that material bonding the turns of the voice coil together prior to moulding, or the material of a former, is not deleteriously affected by temperature.
