Abstract

1423826 Treating elongated metal articles; drawing; blasting ABRASIVE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 6 June 1973 [24 March 1972] 13900/72 Headings B3A B3D and B3P A method of treating elongated metal articles, e.g. metal rod, wire, bar, strip, sections, profiles and extrusions, comprises passing the article through a first treatment zone in which an abrasive entrained in fluid impinges on the article by continuously evacuating the fluid from the zone, and then immediately passing the article through a second zone in which it is treated to provide it with a conversion coating. The conversion coating is formed by the transformation of the outer atomic layers of the metal surface into a chemical compound having properties different from those of the original metal surface, by means of a reaction induced with an artificial environment in the second zone and wherein the metal itself forms one constituent of the compound with the other constituent(s) being supplied from the environment. In the manufacture of bolts or nuts, wire is cleaned with wet or dry abrasive in a chamber in the first zone. The preferred chamber is tubular and is provided with nozzles arranged in one or two helices in the chamber wall. Primary air is drawn through the nozzles and abrasive is entrained in this air. A restricted amount of secondary air enters between the wire and guides at either end of the chamber, while come tertiary air is mixed with the primary air and abrasive just before the mixture enters the chamber. The wire then enters a chamber in the second zone containing a heated phosphate solution which is sprayed on the wire by a number of nozzles. The solution may be atomized and accelerated by compressed air, if desired. The wire next passes through a heated tunnel to dry the solution and then it is coated with drawing lubricant, which is helped to adhere to the wire surface by the phosphate coating. The wire is drawn to its final diameter and it is then subjected to cold forming to make nuts or bolts in conventional manner. The conversion coating may also be formed by passing the elongated metal article through a tank or bath containing the coating-forming material.
