Abstract

1423632 Lasers PIERRES HOLDING SA 18 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18858/73 Heading H1C To prevent radiation reflected from a workpiece from interfering with the operation of a pulsed laser in a machining system using a laser beam, the radiation incident on the workpiece is linearly polarised so that radiation reflected back towards the laser is suppressed by an analyser in the laser beam path. As shown a laser 1 comprises a ruby rod 4, resonator mirrors 2, 3 and a Brewster-angled glass plate 5 which imparts linear polarisation, the rod being pumped by pulsed energy, e.g. from a gas discharge lamp (not shown). The output radiation is passed through a polarisation analyer 7, a quarter wave plate 8 and a focusing lens 9 to a metal or jewel workpiece 10, the linear polarisation 18 being passed by the analyer and converted into circular polarisation 20 by the quarter wave plate. Upon reflection the direction of circular polarisation 22 is reversed, and the quarter wave plate converts the circular polarisation to linear polarisation 23 then suppressed by the analyer which may be a Glan-Thompson or a Wollaston prism. In a modification the Brewster-angled plate 5 is omitted and the ruby laser is internally arranged to generate a linearly polarised output.
