Abstract
1423471 Cutting apparatus M J RUDNEV 7 March 1974 10350/74 Heading B4B A method of cutting expanded polystyrene, e.g. constructional insulating panels 10 by moving the polystyrene relatively to a rotating circular blade 14 having a non-serrated non- sharp edge to cause the blade to enter the polystyrene and be heated frictionally by contact therewith to a temperature to cause fusion of the polystyrene contacted by the blade. As shown in Fig. 1, a panel 10 comprising sheet metal skins 11 adhered to a core of expanded polystyrene is fed, by feed rollers 20, on its edge first past a pair of blades 14 rotatable by a shaft 15, then past a blade 17 rotatable by a shaft 16 and, finally, past a blade 18 rotatable by a shaft 19. The blades 14 and 17 are adapted to form grooves in the edge of the panel while the blade 18 cuts away excess polystyrene extending beyond the edges of the metal plates. The blades 14 are dished and are formed, e.g. by grinding, with an annular surface 21, Fig. 2, so as to reduce its cutting edge 22 to about half the thickness of the body part of the blade. The trimming is also formed with an annular surface (26) Fig. 4 (not shown) which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation; in a modification, however, Fig. 5 (not shown), the outermost part of the annular surface is dished in a direction opposite to that of the concavity of the blade.
