Abstract

1423213 Making artificial leather UNITIKA Ltd 2 May 1973 [2 May 1972] 20830/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B4 B5 D1 and D2] An artificial leather is obtained by coating a foamed polyvinyl chloride resin onto both surfaces of a stretchable non-woven sheet having mutually entangled looped continuous composite filaments composed of at least two different homopolyamides or homopolyamide mixtures in side by side or eccentric conesheath configuration, each filament having a denier of 0.8 to 2, a residual elongation of not more than 100% and at least 20 helical crimps per inch with an average helical radius of 0.1 to 0.5 mm. If the ratio c=b/a is measured, where a is the length of a straight line separating two points on a filament and b is the length of the filament between the lengths then for a=5 mm the probability that c#3 is 20% or less and for a=20 mm the probability the c#2 is 60% or more. The homopolyamide may be nylon 6, nylon 66 or nylon 4. In example 1 the two components are nylon 6 homopolymers of different viscosities, in example 6 the components are nylon 6 and nylon 66 and in other embodiments one or both components may comprise a mixture of the same or different homopolymers. The multifilaments are spun from a multihole spinneret, drafted, taken up at at least 1500 metres/minute by an air stream which deposits them on a moving surface to form a bulky web and allowing the web to stand or heat treating it, to allow the crimps to develope. The drafting may be performed by rollers or by the air stream. Preferably the distance I between spinneret 1 and the ejector 3 is 50 to 100 cm and the distance III between ejector and receiving surface 4 is 70 to 140 cm, extension tubes 3', 3" being fitted to the ejector if necessary to attain these distances. The receiving surface 4 is a wire belt or a perforated cylinder moved at a constant rate. Collection of the filaments may be assisted by suction and/or by electrostatic charging. The ejector(s) 3 may be traversed across the collector surface. The filaments may form bundles of up to 24 parallel filaments but the crimps of such filaments are not completely in phase. Alternatively electrostatic means may separate the filaments before collection. The sheet may be cohered by 50 to 3000 needle punchings or fluid punchings / sq. in. In example 5 a needled sheet is treated with an aqueous emulsion of silicone oil to form a mosaic of hydrophillic and hydrophobic areas then immersed in a dimethylformamide solution of polyurethane to spot bond the sheet. The sheet may be passed between embossing rollers at 180‹C having a woven pattern and the embossed surfaces coated with foamed vinyl chloride resin (example 6). In another example the fibres of the surface are raised to form an artificial chamois leather.
