1423157 Diamond synthesis INSTITUT FIZIKI VYSOKIKH DAVLENY AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 14 Dec 1972 57859/72 Heading C1A Polycrystalline diamond aggregates of predetermined shape are produced by forming a blank of a non-diamond carbonaceous material, e.g. spectral graphite, immersing the blank in a powdered catalyst having a particle size of from 1 to 5 Á, e.g. Group VIII metals of the Periodic System, alloys thereof, carbides and metal carbide systems, subjecting the blank whilst immersed in the catalyst to a pressure of at least 80 kbar and a temperature of at least 1500‹ C. for a period of from 0À1 to 10 seconds to form the diamond aggregate. The blank should have dimensions exceeding the desired dimensions of the polycrystalline diamond aggregate by from 20 to 30% and should preferably be prepared from graphite of density at least 2À00 grams/c.c. and particle size 300- 1000 Š. In the apparatus of Fig. 1, a high temperature reaction cell 1 is disposed in a container 2 of lithographic stone which is placed in a chamber which can be maintained at high temperature and pressure by means of heater 3, 3a and an hydraulic press (not shown). Blank 4 may be in the shape of a nut, an octahedron, screw, draw-plate or two conical vessels. Diamond articles are removed from the reaction cell by means of hydrofluoric and nitric acid treatment.
