Abstract

1422947 Electric couplings BICC Ltd 8 May 1973 [8 May 1972] 21407/72 Heading H2E A method of making a fluid-tight joint between the end of a metal sheath of a cable and a metal body (for example, another sheath or a joint of termination enclosure) having a throughbore, comprises shaping a length of sheath adjacent the end such that it is radially spaced from the cable core, either inserting a length of the body into the space between the sheath and core or inserting a tubular metal mandrel into the space and arranging a length of the body to overlie the said length of the sheath, and circumferentially compressing the overlying lengths of sheath and body, and mandrel if present, radially inwardly. The end wall 1 of a joint enclosure has a sleeve 2 which is positioned between the radially-stretched length 3 of a corrugated aluminium sheath 3 and the cable core, and an alumium sleeve 7 is permanently compressed to retain the joint. The sleeve 2 is serrated at 6 and has grooves 4 holding 0-rings 5. A temporary poultice 10 prevents the escape of insulating fluid from the core during the jointing process. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the joint enclosure sleeve surrounds the sheath and is serrated on its inner surface, therebeing a mandrel (18) with two circumferential grooves (19), 0-rings being positioned between the sheath and joint enclosure sleeve to overlie these grooves. Circumferential clamps (Fig. 4, not shown) may be used instead of the sleeve 12. The joint-enclosure sleeve may also include flat bottomed grooves (44, Fig. 5) housing flat rubber seals (48), or other flat bottomed grooves (54) into which the sheath and an overlying sleeve are compressed. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the end of the sheath folded back on itself and the sleeve is positioned between the overlying portions of sheath.
