Abstract

1422640 Making composite metallic laminates UNION CARBIDE CORP 28 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 59907/72 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions B4-B5] A process for making a laminate from a metal or alloy which is solid at 25‹ C., can be reshaped or reformed above some higher temperature and having a temperature (Ta) above which it exhibits hot tack adhesion and a pair of metal mould plates having a Ta higher than that of said metal or alloy, comprises positioning said metal or alloy between said plates whilst the metal or alloy is heated to a temperature which is equal to or greater than its Ta, bringing the metal or alloy into contact with the mould plates so as to provide adhesive bonding by hot tack adhesion between the metal or alloy and the plates, pulling the plates apart, while the metal or alloy is bonded thereto so as to expand the thickness of the metal or alloy and form therein one or more voids of reduced pressure, venting the voids during the pulling apart to equilibrate the pressure within the voids with the pressure without the metal or alloy to regulate the uniformity and integrity of the metal or alloy and cooling the metal or alloy to a temperature below the heat distortion temperature thereof. The mould plates and the metal or alloy may each be in the form of a mesh, lattice or network configuration. Specified metals for the mould plates are aluminium, iron, steel, lead, nickel, magnesium, copper, silver, tin and alloys thereof. Contacting of the components may be effected in a spring-loaded press.
