Abstract
1422618 Making heat exchanger tubes; skelping FOSTER WHEELER CORP 13 Sept 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 43120/73 Headings B3A and B3E A method of manufacturing a heat exchange tube 10 having internal, extended heat exchange elements 20 providing heat exchange surfaces, comprises providing a flat sheet 34 of heat exchange material, welding a plurality of heat exchange elements on one side of the sheet to form a web 35, moving opposite edges of the web together to envelop the elements and bring the edges into proximity, and welding the edges to form a seam 26. The tube may be formed by skelping, Fig. 6, or by helically coiling the web into a tube, Fig. 9. The web 35 is fed over a roller 36 and under a wheel 38 and then progressively formed into a cylinder by passing through pairs of roller wheels 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56. The web then passes through a cylindrical die 62, is welded at 66 by a fusion welder, and passes through a further die 64. Alternatively, the web can be helically wound into a tube 90 using rollers 70, 72, 74, 76, 78, 80. The tube can be cut into convenient lengths if so required. The heat exchange surfaces could be fins, channels, strips, spines or studs.
