Abstract

1422451 Alumina bodies NORTON CO 12 April 1973 [13 April 1972 16 Jan 1973] 17677/73 Heading C1A A method of making alumina bodies with surface area > 60 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. comprises mixing together, possibly with added water, a grain consisting of gibbsite, bayerite or well-crystallized boehmite and a bond consisting of microcrystalline boehmite and a monobasic acid (formic preferably, or nitric, hydrochloric, acetic or propanoic) with a bond : grain ratio 15: 85 to 75: 25, shaping to form, drying and firing at 300-950‹ C. Burn-out material, e.g. p-dichlorobenzene, and soluble compounds of catalytic metals may be added to the mix. An alumina body having a surface area > 60m.<SP>2</SP>/g.and> 0.115c.c.s/g. of pores > 350 Š and > 0À1 c.c.s/g. of pores > 1000 Š exclusive of pores < 44 Š and those due to burn-out material and containing 99% alumina predominantly as gamma, delta or theta alumina or boehmite and showing a characteristic peak for chi alumina in its powder X-ray diffraction pattern is claimed per se.
