Abstract
1336148 Magnesia-alumina composition; spinel IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 May 1971 [9 June 1970] 27839/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] A material contains magnesia and alumina at least partly combined as magnesia-alumina spinel in the form of assemblies of sheets of crystallites. The crystallites may be less than 300 Š in diameter and the sheets a diameter between 1000 and 10,000 Š. The alumina and magnesia may be present as spinel to an extent of 50% by weight. The specific surface may be 50-350 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The material may be prepared by reacting a soluble magnesium salt with an alkaline precipitant in the presence of a suspen - sion of an alumina having sheet-like structure, drying and calcining the precipitate. In Example 1 pseudobohmite alumite, produced by acidification of sodium aluminate was stirred in water, a solution of magnesium nitrate and ammonium nitrate added to the slurry, the solids being then dried and calcined at 600‹ C. for 6 hours. Details of density and pore volume are also given in Example 1. The material is used as a catalyst support (Division B1).
