Abstract
142,241. Southworth, J. March 11, 1919. Sand, distributing on wheel tracks.-Relates to sand-boxes for locomotives &c., of the type in which the sand is ejected by means of jets of water directed into the box. According to the invention, in order that raw sand containing pebbles or the like may be used, the box 1 is provided with a fine sloping sieve 3 located over the sand-discharge pipe 7, and the water is introduced into the box through a pipe 2 terminating in a rose 2a located above the sieve 3. The water-pipe 2 and sand-pipe 7 are provided respectively with valves 9, 10 which are interconnected by a rod 8 and levers so as to open or close simultaneously. A steam-pipe 6 is passed through the box and alongside the sand-pipe 7, in order to prevent freezing of the water in these parts.
