Abstract

1422370 Laminating metals to polyolefins WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 7 Aug 1973 [8 Aug 1972] 37342/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Polyolefins such as high- or low-pressure polyethylene, polypropylene or a polybutene may be laminated to metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sn, Pb or an alloy of two or more thereof by coating the surfaces to be joined with an aqueous adhesive which is an aqueous dispersion comprising (i) an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 40-85 wt. per cent vinyl acetate units and having a Mooney Viscosity (ML-4) of 8-40 (ii) 1-10 wt. per cent relative to (i) of a 1,2-polybutadiene of mol. wt. 500-10,000 and (iii) from 0À5-5 wt. per cent relative to (i) of a peroxide for curing the polybutadiene, drying the coating and then laminating under heat and pressure to cure the polybutadiene. In the examples aluminium foils are laminated to polyethylene sheets 2 mm. thick and in one example the aluminium is first primed with a solution of a vinyl acetate/vinyl laurate copolymer, before coating with the adhesive composition. The peroxide used in the examples is 1,1 - bis - t - butylperoxy - 3,3,5 - trimethoxycyclohexane.
