1422280 Aspirators H AKIYAMA 19 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 58968/73 Heading A5R An aspirator for, e.g. removing the contents of cystic tumours, comprises a hollow suction structure 10 having an open bottom, said structure being adapted to define a vacuum chamber 16 therein, a source 28 of suction adapted to communicate with said chamber through a tube 26, a guide sleeve 12 fixedly supported within said suction structure, a puncture tube 15 slidably received in the guide sleeve and having a lower end 22 bevelled to define a cutting edge adapted to make a puncture in a tumour, a collar 23 for supporting said puncture tube within said guide sleeve so that said lower end projects downwardly from said guide sleeve, a drainage tube 31 slidably located in said puncture tube and insertable in said tumour, and a source 32 of suction coupled to said drainage tube. The aspirator may include a partition 11 fixedly supported within the suction structure and adapted to define an annular air chamber 17 between said vacuum chamber and said guide sleeve. In an alternative embodiment, a gauze (33) Fig. 4, (not shown), is fixedly provided at the bottom end of said vacuum chamber and the partition is dispensed with. A reservoir (18) Fig. 2, (not shown), is defined upon the suction structure by a hollow, open-top cylinder 19 detachably mounted thereon. Cylinder 19 has a first pair 20 of diametrically opposed guide slots extending vertically thereon, and a second pair 21 of horizontally extending slots, said puncture tube having a pair of support rods 24, which are locatable in said slots 20, when the end 22 projects downwardly from the guide sleeve, or in slots 21, when said end of the puncture tube is retracted into the guide sleeve. The source 28 of suction may be a syringe. The aspirator may also be used for making insertion into body cavities or joints.
