Abstract

1422185 Gel-forming polyvinyl alcohol compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 1 June 1973 [5 June 1972] 26314/73 Heading C3P A dry blend, which when mixed with water, forms a cross-linked gel, comprises (A) a hydroxyl polymer which is (i) a vinyl alcohol polymer containing at least 50 mole per cent of vinyl alcohol units and having a Hoeppler viscosity of 4-150 c.p. or (ii) a mixture of at least 0À5 wt. per cent of a polymer as defined in (i) with one or both of up to 99À5 wt. per cent of a starch and up to 33 wt. per cent of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; (B) a water-soluble solid titanium salt of a C 2-10 hydroxycarboxylic acid, present inan amount which provides 0À05- 10 parts by wt. of tetravalent titanium ions per 100 parts by wt. of (A); and (C) a water-soluble solid C 2-10 hydroxy carboxylic acid present in an amount of from 0À05-20 parts by wt. per 100 parts by wt. of (A). In aqueous solution the Ti ions cross-link the vinyl alcohol polymer, the efficiency of said cross-linking being enhanced by the presence of component (C). In the examples various polyvinyl alcohols, including a vinyl alcohol methylmethacrylate copolymer are compounded with titanium citrate and citric acid, or tetraisopropyl titanate and lactic acid. The latter mixture results in the in situ formation of a mixture of lactic acid and titanium lactate. Other hydroxy acids for use in forming the salt (B) or for use as component (C) are tartaric acidand salicylic acid. The resulting gels are used for size-coating paper.
