Abstract

1329693 Alginate material WALLACE CAMERON & CO Ltd 7 Sept 1970 [27 Sept 1969] 47643/69 Heading C3U [Also in Divisions A5 and B2] A surgical dressing comprises a haemostatic material on a substrate, the haemostatic material comprising an alginate and a water-soluble polymer. The substrate may be a thin polyvinyl chloride sheet. The alginate may be sodium alginate, calcium alginate or calcium sodium alginate or a mixture thereof. The polymer is at least one of polyvinylacetate/polyvinylpyrrolidone copolymers; sodium carboxymethyl cellulose ; polyethylene oxide; poly(galactose methacrylate); poly(galactose acrylate); methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymers; allantoin polygalacturonic acid; and polyvinyl alcohol. The haemostatic material may comprise 15- 85% by weight alginate and 85-15% by weight polymer. A total of up to 15% by weight of the haemostatic material of a local anaesthetic, antiseptic or plasticizer (e.g. at least one of glycerol, diacetin, dibutyl phthalate and acetyl tributyl citrate) may be present. The material may be in the form of block, sheet or film, and may be formed by mixing the alginate, polymer and a liquid vehicle and forming a solid from the resulting mixture by casting on to a substrate. Preferably an aqueous solution or suspension of the alginate is mixed with an aqueous solution of polymer.
