Abstract
1422063 Locking hinges H R TURNER (WILLENHALL) Ltd 22 Feb 1974 [23 Feb 1973 8 May 1973] 8967/73 21765/73 and 47462/73 Heading E2F [Also in Division A4] A backrest adjustment arrangement which allows adjustments of smaller increment than the pitch of the interengaging teeth comprises a pair of parts 10, 11 e.g. for attachment to the backrest and seat cushion respectively, which parts are provided with teeth 16, 17. The set of teeth (17) which is more remote from the hinge axis is mounted for translational movement in a first direction transverse to the hinge axis towards and away from the axis so as to provide engagement and disengagement, and also mounted for translational movement in a second direction transverse to the first direction and to the hinge axis. User-actuable means are provided for effecting movement of the teeth between meshing and disengaged positions; during re-meshing the teeth 17 move in the second direction to accommodate any misalignment of the sets of teeth 16, 17. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the parts are arranged as shown and operate as follows: A lever (not shown) is operated to turn link 27 clockwise which moves plates 28, 29 upwards. The plates 28, 29 after initial lost motion, then lift hinge pin 12 and therefore also lift wedge plate 13 and plate 10. Toothed sectors 16, 17 are thus separated and adjustment of the backrest is made. The lever (not shown) is now returned thus lowering hinge pin 12, wedge plate 13 and plate 10. If the teeth of 16, 17 are not in alignment, the wedge plate 13 is free to move horizontally inside aperture 14 in plate 11. After such movement, wedges 24 move downwardly in the downwardly narrowing gaps between wedge plate 13 and aperture 14 to lock wedge plate 13 in position. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the pivotally mounted toothed member 17 is replaced by one which is permanently affixed to member 11. In another embodiment (Fig. 5) a lever 66 is rotated clockwise to draw wedges 62a, b out of engagement with the inner surface of aperture 55 and the outer surface of boss 54. Wedges 62a, b now bear against surfaces 65 to lift plate 50 to disengage teeth 51, 53. When lever 66 is returned teeth 51, 53 are re-engaged, plate 56 having lateral freedom of movement to overcome misalignment, and wedges 62a, b reoccupy their wedging positions. In yet another embodiment (Fig. 6) operating handle 142 displaces link 140 in direction C. Link 156 therefore pulls wedges 150 out of engagement with portions 149 of plate 114 and fixed guides 148; continued movement causes wedges 150 to abut against projections 158 to withdraw the teeth of plate 114 from teeth 118 to allow backrest adjustment. On returning handle 142, plate 114 is capable of lateral movement in case the two sets of teeth are misaligned.
