Abstract
1422055 A blowing lance for incorporating solid material into molten metal ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH-DUDELANGE SA 25 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 25218/73 Heading F4B Solid material (e.g. alloying elements or refining substances) in the form of a powder or a solid-liquid mixture is fed to a bath of molten metal by a lance. A screw 30 in the lance feeds the material to a conical mixing chamber 42, and gas, which is also fed to the mixing chamber, propels the material through a discharge tube 43 into the molten metal (not shown). The gas is supplied either through an inlet 17 and axially through a hollow shaft of the screw or through an annular passage 33 bounded by a guide tube 31 of the screw and the housing of the lance body 40. The solid material is supplied to the lance via a valve 21 from a storage hopper 10 having an agitator 11. The apparatus is supported on a revolving platform 26. In modifications and alternatives: the lance may rotate about its vertical axis and/or be rotated eccentrically to describe a circle in the bath; the lance may be immersed obliquely in the bath and be moved so as to describe a cone; the vessel containing the molten metal may be moved so as to give relative rotation between the vessel and lance; the storage hopper may be static and the lance rotated; the terminal part of the lance may have the shape of part of a spiral, the end of the lance may also carry several arms each having an orifice; the feed supply to the lance may rest on a weighting machine to enable monitoring of flow. The apparatus can be used for treating molten cast iron, steel or other metals by deoxidation, desulphuration, dephosphoration or alloying in a furnace, ladle, mixer or tank wagon.
