Abstract

1421900 Valves H WATTS and D E WATTS 16 March 1973 [25 March 1972 (2)] 15814/75 and 15815/75 Divided out of 1421899 Heading F2V A mixing valve comprises laterally disposed inlets 3, 4, Fig. 16, for hot and cold water and at least one outlet 15 for the discharge of water, the inlets and outlet being connectible by a valve member 6 having sealing rings 9, 10 which are in register with the inlets and are urged into sealing engagement by inlet pressure with the interior of the valve body 1 to prevent cross flow when the valve is closed. When the valve member is moved downwardly from the position shown, a space 41 connects the inlets with the outlet while rotation of the member varies the ratio of hot to cold water flowing through the valve, the rotational movement being limited by a stop 24. Two outlets 15, 16 for a bath and a shower may be provided. The imbalance in hydraulic forces on the valve member due to a spindle 19 is insufficient to overcome the friction of the seals if the spindle diameter does not exceed 6 mm. In a further embodiment, both ends of the valve member (6, Fig. 10) are vented to atmosphere and only a central portion of the member, controlling flow to a single outlet, is subjected to water pressure so that the member is hydraulically balanced. In Figs. 19 and 20, a valve member 6 is rotated to allow hot and cold water from inlets 3, 4 to enter spaces 13,14 from which it flows through ports 35, 37 to an outlet 15, the ratio of hot to cold flows being adjusted by an independently rotatable valve member 35. In a further modification, the member (6, Fig. 12) carrying the sealing rings is rotated to vary the ratio of hot to cold flows while an independently operable axially spaced member (35) which may rotate or rotate and move axially, controls the volume of flow to the outlet. In all of the embodiments the sealing rings may be slightly compressed radially of the valve member during assembly or be outwardly biased by springs.
