Abstract
1421527 C 21 -dicarboxylic acid WESTVACO CORP 11 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 06223/74 Heading C2C A process for the production of a C 21 -dicarboxylic acid having the formula wherein one X is hydrogen, and the other is a carboxylic acid group, comprises simultaneously reacting both the non-conjugated and conjugated linoleic acid portions of a fatty acid mixture with an amount of acrylic acid of from 5 to 26% by weight of said fatty acid mixture and, as catalyst, either (i) 0À5 to 5À0% by weight of fatty acid mixture of sulphur dioxide, or (ii) 0À01 to 0À2% by weight of active palladium of palladium-on-carbon, at a temperature of from 200 to 270 C. The said fatty acid mixture is suitably a tall oil fatty acid mixture. The process may further include distilling the fatty acid mixture containing the dicarboxylic acid and recovering a linoleic-free fatty acid fraction and a dicarboxylic acid fraction.
