Abstract

1421388 Separator for dry cell VARTA BATTERIE AG 21 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 44348/73 Heading H1B The separator of a dry cell having an anode comprising a magnesium can consists of cross linked synthetic resin ion exchanger granules bonded together by a binding agent to form a thin film directly contacting the inner surface of the can, the absorption capacity of the granules for water being less than three times their dry weight-preferably being approximately equal to their own dry weight. The preferred ion exchange is a cation exchanger comprising polystyrene sulphonic acid cross-linked with divinylbenzene. The separator film may be applied to the can by forming a suspension of the ion exchanger material and spraying it on to the can whilst the can is rotating. The depolarizer comprises MnO 2 and the electrolyte comprises an aqueous solution of a magnesium salt, e.g. magnesium bromide or perchlorate.
