1421316 Salt bath tempering CREUSOTLOIRE 25 March 1974 [22 May 1973] 13167/74 Heading C7N In the tempering of segments of high speed steel saws in which the teeth 13 are to be hardened while the fixing rivet holes 14 are not, the segments are suspended from a horizontal support 11 within an airtight, pre-heated bell 10, which is immersed to a predetermined depth in a salt bath 2. The depth of immersion is such that the teeth 13 are within the uniform temperature zone 2' of the bath 2 (the upper 50-60 mm of which has a non-uniform temperature due to cooling by fume removal) and the rivet holes 14 are not immersed. Control of depth of article immersion is by the pressure difference between the air trapped in the bell and the air pressure within the furnace.
