Abstract
1421219 Phosphate glass using radio-active waste materials GELSENBERG AG 14 Sept 1973 [14 Sept 1972] 43375/73 Heading C1M A process for the formation of a phosphate glass from a solution of radio-active waste materials comprises introducing the solution, to which phosphate ions and, if necessary, alkali metal ions have been added to adjust the weight ratio of the metal oxide content of the solution to the phosphorus pentoxide content of the solution to that suitable for the formation of phosphate glass, into a zone-heated vessel in a manner such that evaporation of liquid from the solution or slurry, and calcination and melting of the resulting solid material take place exclusively at the wall or the walls of the vessel. If the solution contains nitrates it is preferred to denitrate before use and the solution or slurry may be concentrated before introduction into the vessel, the concentrated material having a solids content of 40-70% by weight. In the specific embodiment (Figure) the solution or slurry is supplied via a feed pipe 2 located at the wall of a cylindrical upright vessel or pipe 1. The feed pipe 2 has an obliquely terminated lower end so that the incoming solution or slurry is guided to the wall of the vessel 1. A thermocouple element guide pipe 3 is arranged coaxially of the pipe 1. The pipe 1 is located in an oven by means of which the lower part (melting zone) has a temperature of 800-1000‹ C., the middle zone (calcination zone) a temperature of 700‹ C., and the upper end (evaporation zone) a temperature of 100‹ C. The upper end of the pipe may originally have a temperature of 200‹ C. which is then lowered to 100‹ C. by the introduction of water via the feed pipe. The monitoring and control of the temperature is effected by thermocouple elements mounted in the guide pipe 3. In a specific embodiment a denitrated waste solution of the following composition is introduced:-F 5À09 g./l., Al 18.35 g./l., fission products 204 g./l., H 3 PO 4 779À6 g,/l. and Na 2 O 65 g./l. The glass melt is discharged from the lower end of the pipe 1 through a discharge pipe 5. Waste vapours produced escape through the waste gas pipe 4.
