Abstract
1420927 Surface carburetters ultrasonic vibratory fuel injectors PLESSEY CO Ltd 29 March 1973 [15 April 1972] 17559/72 Heading FIB [Also in Divisions F3 and F4] A fuel injection system comprises a vibrator 9, Fig.1 for vibrating a nozzle 4, Fig.2 to atomize the injected fuel, the nozzle having a bore for the passage of fuel to a fuel injection orifice, the fuel injection system being such that without nozzle vibration there is no fuel atomization, the nozzle having a baffle which is so located in the bore that it extends at least into the orifice and occupies the central part of the orifice. Induction air is aspired via a filter 2, fuel from a tank 12 being supplied by a pump 11. The nozzle unit 4 is attached to an ultrasonic transducer 9 which is energized via a timer oscillator 10 to vibrate the unit when fuel passes via a ball-valve 46 (which operates as described in Specification 1420313) and thence through conduits 42, 44 and into the induction pipe as a fine mist. Ball-valve 46 is reseated to stop the engine. The length of the transducer energization period may be varied e.g. by an engine-driven switch or by the device described in Specification 1138536. The nozzle may be situated in an engine cylinder and the baffle may be moved into the fuel path by an electromechanical arrangement.
