Abstract

1420887 Television; magnetic bubble systems MULLARD Ltd 13 Feb 1974 06477/74 Headings H4F and H3B The video signal derived by a television transmitter scanning in a boustrophedral pattern is reproduced at a receiver by means of a visible light source 1 illuminating a body 4 located between crossed polarizers 2, 3 and having a transparent display area supporting a magnetic bubble domain shift register channel 5 whose path corresponds to the boustrophedral scan pattern at the transmitter, an analogue-todigital converter being located at the transmitter or receiver to convert the analogue video signal into serial binary information suitable for feeding into the bubble shift register channel. A coil 6 is shown for providing a bubble supporting magnetic bias field normal to the body 4 although permanent magnetic means may be provided. The bubbles 7 in the shift register each have a direction of magnetization opposite to that of the surrounding material and so effect an opposite Faraday rotation. Body 4 may comprise the monocrystalline bismuth substituted garnet Bi 0 . 8 Sm 2 . 2 Ga 1 . 0 Fe 4 . 0 O 12 and may be cut from a crystal, polished and supported on a glass plate or it may be epitaxially grown on a transparent non-magnetic crystal substrate such as a rare-earth gallium garnet. The display may not be illuminated during operation of the shift register while the bubbles are propagated along the channel 5. The polarizer 2 and analyser 3 may be combined, a mirror being located behind the body 4. To view the display it is magnified by a lens. The A-D converter may include means for coding the serial binary information so as to enable the display to show a grey scale pattern, e.g. by modulating the spacing between the bubbles.
