Abstract
1420538 Taking up slack in flexible elements DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORP 1 Feb 1974 [12 March 1973] 04903/74 Heading B8B Power is supplied to a soot blower lance carriage 22 reciprocable along a supporting beam, by a flexible helically coiled electrical or pressure fluid conductor 32, secured at one end 33 to a fixed wall 30 and at the other end to an arm 44 movable with the carriage 22, the conductor 32 being frictionally engaged within its coils at the carriage end thereof, by a cone 55 which prevents excessive axial opening of the helix in the region adjacent the carriage end thereof. The cone 55 has a base flange 51 secured to the arm 44 and the conductor 32 is clamped to the flange. The conductor 32 is generally supported on a rod 35 extending along the supporting beam, and passing along a slot in the upward facing side of the cone 55, the rod being out of contact with the conductor 32 whilst in the cone slot. As the carriage advances, the conductor helix axially extends and radially contracts, but the cone 55 frictionally engages and prevents the leading portion of the helix from extending and contracting more than a predetermined amount, thereof reducing the stresses to which this leading portion would otherwise be exposed, by spreading the pulling force of the conductor over several convolutions of the helix.
