Abstract

1420140 Laminating embossed flexible webs; seaming non-metallic sheet material PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO 26 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 8592/74 Headings B5N and B5K [Also in Division B6] A laminated tissue or towelling is made by embossing webs W 1 , W 2 to provide projections 30, 31, of height 0À01-0À05 inch and density 10-200 p.s.i./web, interlacing them to provide air spaces between the webs and non-adhesively bonding the webs by compression along parallel spaced-apart lines 27, 28, the directions of the compressive forces being convergent. The webs are separately embossed between rollers and, after superposition, are bonded by passing between a bevelled wheel 16 and an anvil roller 17 which is constructed to have a co-operating bevelled groove 21. The compressive force developed at each pair of bevelled surfaces is sufficient to glassine and bond the webs. If the wheel 16 or anvil 17 is notched, the bonding lines 27, 28 are intermittent. Preferably bonding is carried out along the edges of the laminate. The loading on the individual embossing rollers may be varied by air cushions.
