Abstract

1419986 Stirling cycle engines BATTELLEINSTITUTeV 25 Jan 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 3897/73 Heading F1S A stirling cycle engine has double-acting pistons 1 to 6 which are connected to pistons 13 to 18 which are hydraulically linked with two hydraulic rotary piston units, the number of chambers in each rotary piston unit corresponding to the number of hydraulically linked pistons and the cylinder of each hydraulically linked piston being connected to one of the chambers of each rotary piston unit through conduits 26 to 29 and 38 to 41 and the volume of hydraulic fluid displaced in the two chambers which are connected to the cylinder of each hydraulically linked piston can be varied by varying the phase position of the rotary pistons with respect to each other. For supporting the rotary pistons and for effecting sealing of the chambers rotatable rollers (not shown) may be provided. Pairs of counterweights are provided which are rigidly connected to the drive-shafts of the rotary pistons. Means for varying the phase angle between the two rotary pistons comprises an axially movable sleeve (not shown) coaxial with the drive-shaft and having two helical threads of steep pitch each co-operating with a helical thread coupled to one of the rotary pistons. The axial movement of the sleeve may be effected hydraulically.
