Abstract

1419944 Treating waste material FOSTER WHEELER JOHN BROWN BOILERS Ltd 8 Dec 1971 [10 Dec 1971] 57591/71 Heading C1C [Also in Division F4] A plant for the treatment of sewage, solid waste comprising combustible and non-combustible solids, and waste fuel comprises a fluidized bed incinerator, means for converting the solid waste into a form in which it can be incinerated in the incinerator, sewage treatment apparatus comprising means for separating the sewage into a partially dewatered solids portion and clarified liquor, and a disinfector, the plant being constructed such that, in use, part or all of the sewage can be passed through or can bypass the sewage treatment apparatus on its way to the incinerator. In the sewage treatment apparatus the sewage may be subjected to aeration, treatment with flocculating agents, and settling, flotation or filtration. In one embodiment the sewage is treated in the sewage treatment apparatus, and the partially dewatered solids portion and at least some of the clarified liquor are passed to the incinerator where they are burned in admixture with solid waste which has been treated in a macerator or hydropulper, any remaining clarified liquor being disinfected with chlorine. In another embodiment the sewage is passed directly to the incinerator which also receives converted solid waste and waste oil. The incineration step produces a sterile ash which can be cooled in a fluidized bed cooler, and a deodorized gas. Suitable incinerators are described in cognate Specification 1,418,631.
