Abstract

1419899 Tape cartridges SCM CORP 19 Feb 1974 [24 April 1973] 7555/74 Heading B8M Part B A cartridge for random storage of ribbon in a chamber between a floor and a ceiling spaced apart a distance greater than the ribbon width, comprises a shroud (on the floor near the ribbon exit area) having an inclined surface rising until the distance between the top of the shroud and the ceiling is less than the ribbon width whereby only a single strand of ribbon is enabled to be withdrawn in orderly manner from the chamber. In the operation of a cartridge mounted on a support 10 on a typewriter, following each impact at the print part of a type character a feed roll 42 pulls the strand 18a of ribbon one character width from arm 16 and forces it through an entrance area 38 into a storage chamber 28 wherein it convolutes simultaneously therewith, strand 18b being pulled from chamber 28 to the arm at an exit area 40 passes over the inclined surface 62 of an arcuate shroud 60 formed around exit roller 52 with minimal disturbance of the stored ribbon and without clogging or fraying.
