1419623 Structural joints SERCK INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 May 1973 [14 March 1972] 11912/72 Heading F2M [Also in Division F4] Means for connecting together the elements of a structural framework (intended for a tower construction such as a cooling tower or a dwelling) consisting of ladder-like elements 16, Fig. 7, and short connecting elements 17, Fig. 2, comprises stub members 23 integral with and projecting from the ladder-like elements 16, the members 23 each having a mitred end, Fig. 10, adapted to mate with the corresponding mitred end of an adjacent element, and a U-shaped member 20 projecting therefrom and fitting snugly into said adjacent element. The mated ends may be secured together by either bolts or rivets passed through aligned holes 21, 22 in the respective ends, or by clamping elements, or by welding. The structure may be of metal, e.g. of square section steel tubing, in which case the whole assembly may be galvanized; or it may be of timber. Fig. 2 shows a cooling tower module resting on concrete beams 26 and comprising a loadbearing framework of the elements 16, 17. The framework is encased by corrugated-metal cladding 14 and contains packing 25, e.g. of the kind described in Specification 1,351,605, cooling air being drawn over the packing through slats 13 by the fan 12. Diagonal bracing struts (not shown) may be mounted near the base of the structure.
