Abstract
1419593 Automatic speed control systems MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 1 March 1973 [13 March 1972] 10088/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] In a homopolar tachogenerator 18, Fig. 1, which is used in a circuit for servo-controlling a tape drive motor 10 in accordance with a reference input signal 15, an aluminium disc 26, Fig. 2, supporting a silver conducting layer 24 via adhesive 28 is coupled to the drive-shaft 30 of the motor 10 such that the layer 24 rotates at the speed of the motor in the homopolar flux set up in a magnetic circuit 34 by a ring magnet 36; an output signal proportional to the speed is taken from two contacts 46, 48 connected to pairs of inner/outer silver carbon brushes 40/41 contacting the layer 24, and is fed back to a difference sensor 14, Fig. 1. In the arrangement of Fig. 3 (not shown), a silver layer (52) on the outside of a steel drum (56) rotates in the homopolar flux of a ring magnet (66). It is stated that the magnets in the above embodiments need not be stationary, e.g. magnet 36 could be secured to disc 26 in Fig. 2, and in Fig. 3 (not shown) a permanent magnet could be substituted for the steel drum (56) and the stationary magnet (66) eliminated.
