Abstract

1419523 Making strain indicators MODULUS CORP 12 Dec 1972 [13 Dec 1971 29 Nov 1972] 57289/72 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions F2 and G1] A bolt having a strain indicator is made by the series of steps shown in Figs. 4a to 4l. A bolt 80 is drilled to provide a bore 22, a counterbore 24 and a pilot hole 26. An indicator capsule assembly is prepared by securing a glass window 56 in a ferrule 52 with adhesive, filling the ferrule with a light adsorbing liquid 64, placing the head of a pin 30 in the liquid such that the coloured end 42 of the pin abuts the window, and compressing the inner portion 74 of an elastomeric sealing member 60 between the inner wall of the ferrule and the pin 30. The end 32 of pin 30 is secured in pilot hole 26 with adhesive, and the ferrule 52 is then secured in the counterbore 24 with adhesive. A modified bolt having a strain indicator is made by the series of steps shown in Figs. 9a to 9m. A bolt 116 is drilled to provide a bore 122, a counterbore 124 and a pilot hole 126. A pin 130 is cut to the precise required length as determined by gauging the bolt 116, and is then fixed by adhesive in the pilot hole 126. An indicating capsule is prepared by taking a plastics body 170, inserting an indicating member consisting of a magnet 176 adhered to a plastics member 172, adding a light adsorbing liquid 164 to the body, bringing a glass or plastics window 156 into position to seal the capsule body, excess liquid escaping through vents 188 in the window (Figs. 6 and 8, not shown) and adhering the window to the capsule body. The capsule is then secured in counterbore 124 by adhesive and staking. The capsule body 170 and the member 172 may be a fluorocarbon and the window an acrylic. In both embodiments the adhesive connections may be replaced by other types of connection.
