Abstract
1419474 Blasting HITACHI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 7 Feb 1974 [20 March 1973 26 Sept 1973] 05647/74 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions B2 and F2] A machine for abrasive cleaning of hull sections comprises an abrasive slinging device 1 having a hood 4 and a drive motor 2 for an impeller 3, an abrasive accommodating container 10 supported by the device 1 and communicating with the impeller chamber through a feed path 11, a tube 26 establishing communication between the interior of the upper portion of the container and the interior of the hood, a channel 27 opening to the upper portion of the container, and means 36 for producing air currents which flow from the interior of the hood through the tube 26 and container to the channel, whereby the abrasive particles slung against the surface to be cleaned and dust are returned to the container by air currents, the dust is separated and passed through the channel 27, and the abrasive is circulated for re-use. The impeller 3 is driven by an air motor 2 and slings abrasive at a surface 25 enclosed by the hood 4 which has a skirt 74 of rubber or the like surrounded by a brush 75. A handle 5 having a grip bar 6 is secured to the device 1, the handle having an on-off valve controlling the supply of air from a compressor tube 7 to a branch tube 8 and hose 9 leading to the motor. The container 10 is connected by piping 11 to an abrasive feed path 12 leading to the impeller, the path terminating in a laterial outlet 13, the flow of abrasive along the path and through the outlet being assisted by air pressure from nozzles 15 and 22 connected by hoses 20, 23 to the branch tube 8. The outlet 3 is in a cylinder 24 rotatably adjustable to control the position of the feed into the impeller. The hood 4 is connected by the tube 26 to a tangentially arranged opening 38 in the upper part of the container 10, the upper part also being connected through an orifice 40 in a plate 41 with a tube portion 32 which has a constricted passage 35 connected to a filter bag 28 and a nozzle 36 directed at the passage and connected by a hose 37 to the branch tube 8. The pressure from the nozzle 36 cause flow through the constricted passage 35 to produce a negative pressure in the upper part of the container so that abrasive and dust passing from the hood through tube 26 to the container are separated, the dust passing to the filter bag and the abrasive falling to the feed path 12. In another embodiment, the nozzle 36 and constricted passage 35 are replaced by a vacuum cleaner connected to the tube portion 32. To prevent abrasive being sucked into the air motor when the on-off valve is closed, the valve not only cuts off the supply to the tube leading to the air motor and the tube leading to the nozzles 15, 16 but also cuts off connection between the tubes. The machine may be used to clean the corner between a vertical surface 79b and a horizontal surface 79a and has a hood 80, Fig. 8, shaped to fit the corner, the machine being supported by adjustable wheels 93 engaging the surfaces.
