Abstract

1419206 Plating glass and silica substrates; electro-plating PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 59061/73 Headings C7B and C7F] Glass or silica substrates are roughened mechanically to have an average surface roughness of 0.2 to 2.5 Ám, etched in HF, provided with metal nuclei of e.g. Cu, Ag, Au, Pd, Pt, Hg and then plated with e.g. Ni or Cu. A photo-sensitive layer may be applied before the metal nuclei to provide a metal layer in the form of a pattern. Stannous chloride may be applied before the metal nuclei. A copper plating bath may comprise (moles) 0.028 copper sulphate pentahydrate, 0.030 e.d.t.a., 0.10 NaOH, 0.13 formaldehyde and 1g. of polyethylene glycol. A Ni bath may be (g./l.) 30 NiCl 2 , 10 NaH 2 PO 2 , 10.5 citric acid, NaOH to pH 4.5. A farther Cu layer may be electro-plated using a 0.75 mol. copper sulphate, 0.75 mol. H 2 SO 4 bath.
