1419109 Purifying hydrocarbon oils BALLESTRA SpA 19 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 58447/72 Heading C5E Saturated hydrocarbons are obtained by sulphonating a mixture comprising a higher boiling fraction boiling above 320‹ F. and containing sulphonatable aromatic compounds and a lower boiling fraction boiling within the range 120- 280‹ C. and also containing sulphonatable aromatic compounds, separating oil-insoluble sulphonic acids from the mixture, then neutralizing and separating oil-soluble sulphonic acids from the mixture and distilling at 120-280‹ C. to separate a deo-kerosine as distillate leaving a white oil as residue. The sulphonating agent used can be a gaseous mixture containing 6-10 volume per cent SO 3 , 0À1-0À2% SO 2 and 93À9- 89À8% N 2 +O 2 . The mixture 55 is treated in a series of stirred reactors 251, 252, 253 and 254 with gaseous sulphonating agent from line 66 and spent sulphonating gases are removed through lines 58, 59 and 60, an excess of sulphonating agent is passed into the final reactor 254 and recycled to the first reactor 251 through line 56. Each of the reactors (which are described in Fig. 6, not shown) comprises a bottom section which allows the insoluble sulphonic acids to settle out and be withdrawn. The oil mixture is fed between the reactors by lines 166, 71 and 72 and withdrawn by line 49; the mixture is recycled within each reactor via lines 73.
