Abstract
1419058 Glass-ceramics CORNING GLASS WORKS 29 May 1974 23716/74 Heading C1M A glass-ceramic article comprises, in weight per cent as calculated from the batch: the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible constituents, and at least 50% of the volume of the article consisting of one or more fluor-amphibole crystal phases selected from fluor - richterite, fluor - magnesio - richterite, proto - amphibole, fluor - eckemanite, fluoredenite and fluor-tremolite. The glass-ceramic article may be made by: (a) melting a batch for a crystallizable glass of appropriate composition; (b) simultaneously cooling the melt to a temperature below the transformation range and shaping a glass article therefrom; and (c) heating the glass article to 760-1000‹ C. for sufficient time (e.g. 2-24 hours) to obtain the desired fluor-amphibole crystal phase(s) by crystallization. In examples, step (c) comprises heating to 800‹ C. at 200‹ C./hour, holding at 800‹ C. for 4 hours, heating to 1000‹ C. at 200‹ C./hour, holding at 1000‹ C. for 4 hours, and cooling to room temperature. Compatible constituents which may be present include TiO 2 (0-9À5%), BaO (0-16À8%) and Fe 2 O 3 (0- 16À3%).
