The means for exerting axial force on the shaft end is shown in Fig. 1 by an orifice 23 connecting the pressure chamber 21 with the end of the lower bearing 12 for the shaft a disc 24 and ball member 25 coaxial with the shaft transmit the fluid pressure from the pressure chamber to the end of the shaft 14. Fig. 3 (not shown) is a similar arrangement but in which a spacer (26) is inserted between the ball and the shaft end. Alternatively, the impeller blades may be angled downwardly and the orifices inclined upwardly to direct the jets of water upwardly and hence a compartment of the force is directed axially to support the shaft.
