Abstract

1418975 Water-soluble sulphonated polyesters RHONE-PROGIL 30 May 1973 [13 July 1972 10 Jan 1973] 25728/73 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A water-soluble sulphonated polyester is prepared by either (1) sulphonating a polyester derived from (a) an aromatic diacid, anhydride or diester, (b) an unsaturated aliphatic diacid, anhydride or diester, (b) a saturated glycol, or (2) reacting (b<SP>1</SP>) a sulphonation product of an unsaturated aliphatic diacid, diester, (a) an aromatic diacid, anhydride or diester and (c) a saturated glycol, the molar ratio of (b) or (b<SP>1</SP>) to the total amount of (a) and either (b) or (b<SP>1</SP>) being at least 0À05 : 1. The examples describe (1) using sodium bisulphite or sodium meta-bisulphite to sulphonate polyesters derived from the following compounds: dimethyl isophthalate, isophthalic acid, dimethyl terephthalate, dimethyl maleate, maleic anhydride, itaconic acid, diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol, and (2) reacting sodium dimethyl sulphosuccinate or diethylene glycol sulphosuccinate, prepared by sulphonating dimethyl maleate and diethylene glycol maleate, with isphthalic acid and diethylene glycol. The sulphonated polyesters may be dissolved in water to give a textile sizing composition.
