Abstract
1418772 Mixing apparatus; spray-producers RANSBURG CORP 16 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 12853/73 Headings B1C and B2F A fluid mixing device comprises support means defining an elongate chamber, a member inserted in said chamber to leave a mixing space at the forward end, said member defining a first fluid passage with means for causing fluid from said first passage to enter the mixing space as a plurality of streams, said member further defining a second fluid passage with means for causing fluid from said second passage also to enter the mixing space as a plurality of streams, and means within the mixing space between the member and an outlet for producing turbulence to further mix the fluids. First fluid supplied from a conduit 41 passes down a central passage 55 in a diffuser element 50 and emerges through holes 57 into a mixing chamber 32 as a plurality of separate streams, while a second fluid supplied from a conduit 43 passes via an annular distributing chamber 59 and channels 61 in the outer surface of the diffuser element to the chamber 32 the second fluid thus also emerging as a plurality of streams, to mix with the streams of first fluid. A baffle element 63 comprising spaced discs 65 each with peripheral cutout portions 66 is located in the chamber 32 to promote turbulence and further mixing of the fluids which then pass to a spraying tip 70. The latter has a bore 71 with a generally hemispherical end and a V-shaped notch 72 which breaks into the bore to provide a sharp-edged oval orifice 73. The mixing and spraying device may be used spraying resinous materials (e.g. polyester, epoxy or urethane resins) or silicone rubber with catalysts, promoters or curing agents. The second fluid may comprise a mixture of air under pressure (as a carrier) with the catalyst component.
