Abstract

1418575 Power steering systems ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 4 May 1973 [6 May 1972] 21226/73 Heading B7H In a power assisted steering system having an accumulator 38 and control valve 7, a steering force limiting device 9, which gives rise to " feel " under normal driving conditions and whose resistance to steering is limited under parking conditions, is provided. The device is actuated by a steering spindle pin 11 and includes pairs of limiting and reaction pistons 43, 45 and 42, 44. A chamber 48, 49 defined between each limiting and reaction piston is subject to working pressure in the steering rotor cylinders 21, 22 and an annular surface 50, 56 on each limiting piston is subject to accumulator pressure via lines 51, 57. Each reaction piston is slidably spring loaded within a limiting piston. With normal driving accumulator pressure exceeds cylinder working pressure and as a reaction piston is moved against the spring and the pressure in the chamber 48 or 49, the limiting piston remains stationary. At higher working pressures the pressure in chamber 48 or 49 increases in movement of the reaction piston to equalize-the pressure forces acting at each end of the limiting piston and both the reaction and limiting piston move together as a unit.
