Abstract

1418557 Cathodic protection EXXON PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 18 July 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 34176/73 Heading C7E An impressed current cathodic protection system for a marine structure comprises a supporting member 20 that can be lowered in the water into position adjacent said structure and later retrieved, an underwater power supply 30 on or in said supporting member for converting an applied alternating current to low voltage D.C., at least one anode 65, 66, on said supporting member, means for transmitting D.C. from 30 to said anode, and means for transmitting A.C. from a remote source to supply 30. The marine structure may be an oil-drilling rig, in which case 20 is a drill-pipe string, either of metal, when the anodes have dielectric pads between them and 20, or of dielectric material when the anodes are applied directly to 20, e.g. in countersunk grooves to minimize damage. An automatic potential controller may co-operate with supply 30 as in Fig.3 (not shown) so that the potential difference between the anodes and marine structure may be monitored continuously; the D.C. supply to the anodes may be pulsed. Alternative forms of carrier 20 are (1) a cable passing round a sheave on the sea-bed Fig.7 (not shown) and (2) a rod having transversely extending arms to which anodes are attached Fig.6, (not shown). The automatic potential controller may also be within pipe 20; the pipe may be liquid-filled for better cooling of the power supply, and the anodes may be of Pt on Ta, Pt on Nb, Pt on Ti, or Pt-studded Pb. An installation entirely under water, e.g. an oil-gas separator, may also be cathodically protected Fig.8, (not shown).
